He 111H of 5. Staffel KG 26 (‘1H+EN’) : On February 9, 1940 , KG 26 machine (‘1H+EN’) landed in Scotland after being attacked by Spitfires near the Firth of Forth . Unlike the previous case, this aircraft made a near-perfect wheels-down landing and survived intact . It was dismantled and towed to Turnhouse airfield, Edinburgh, from where it was then flown to RAE Farnborough for further examination . Subsequently, it was operated by the RAF’s No 1426 (Enemy Aircraft) Flight for demonstration and fighter training purposes . This He 111H, later given the RAF serial AW 177 , was eventually destroyed in a crash on November 10, 1943 , killing seven of the ten men aboard, including the pilot, Flg.Off. F. A. Barr . The aircraft was even repainted in British camouflage colors, apart from the KG 26 insignia.
