Japanese two-seat, twin-engined fighter.
Design and Structure
Type: Twin-engined Fighter
Wings:
- Configuration: Mid-wing cantilever monoplane with equal taper and rounded tips.
- Structure: All-metal with smooth, stressed skin and flush-riveted surface. It features split trailing-edge flaps positioned between the ailerons and the fuselage.
Fuselage:
- Shape: Oval section with an all-metal semi-monocoque structure and smooth stressed-skin covering.
Tail Unit:
- Type: Cantilever monoplane design with an all-metal framework.
- Covering: The tailplane and fin are metal-covered, while the elevators and rudder are fabric-covered. The rudder has a shielded horn balance, and its hinge line does not extend below the top of the fuselage.
Landing Gear:
- Type: Retractable, with hydraulic retraction. The main wheels retract backwards into the engine nacelles, and hinged doors enclose the wheels within the nacelle contours. It also includes a retractable tail-wheel.
Power Plant
- Engines: Two Mitsubishi Type 1 (Ha 102) fourteen-cylinder, two-row radial air-cooled engines, each producing 1,050 hp. The engines are equipped with two-speed superchargers and drive three-blade Hamilton type constant-speed airscrews. The fuel tanks are located in the wings.

- Crew: Two, consisting of a pilot and a rear gunner.
- Cockpit: The pilot’s cockpit is located over the leading edge of the wings, while the rear gunner’s position is over the trailing edge.
