Spitfire HF Mk VII at Langley

Despite having earlier mark numbers, the Spitfire VII and VIII were introduced after the Mk.IX and represented significant redesigns of the original aircraft for production. Both models were equipped with the 60 series two-speed/two-stage Merlin engines, six-port exhausts, four-bladed propellers, symmetrical underwing radiators, and the extended nose of the Mk.IX. They also featured a structurally modified and stronger fuselage with a revised ‘C’ wing that incorporated shorter span ailerons and extra fuel tanks in the leading edges.

The Spitfire VII included a retractable tail wheel and, in most cases, a pointed fin and rudder with increased area to counteract the destabilizing effects of the high-solidity propeller. It was a specialized high-altitude interceptor with extended span wings and a pressurized cabin fed by a Marshall Mk.XII blower. Of the 140 built, most were fitted with the Merlin 64 engine and were designated F.VII, while a few with Merlin 61 engines shared the same designation. A small number were equipped with the Merlin 71 engine, designated HF.VII, which demonstrated excellent high-altitude performance. However, by the time these aircraft entered service, the threat from high-flying German raiders had diminished, and only 16 Merlin 71 engines were produced.

The first Mk.VII flew in April 1942, with production aircraft rolling off the line starting in September of that year. The last example was delivered in May 1944. No. 124 Squadron was the first of only six operational units to use the aircraft, starting in March 1943. When operating at extreme altitudes, the Spitfire VII often had its armor, cannon, and wing tanks removed to save over 900 pounds (408 kg) in weight, enhancing its performance.
