USS Yorktown (CV-5) was lead ship of the Yorktown class aircraft carrier of World War II, sunk at the Battle of Midway. Carrier was laid down on 21 May 1934 at Newport News, Virginia, by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. and launched on 4 April 1936, sponsored by Eleanor Roosevelt. Commissioned at the Naval Operating Base (NOB), Norfolk, Virginia, on 30 September 1937, Capt. Ernest D. McWhorter in command.
